YEAR 5 11 PLUS EXAM
The Secondary Transfer Test (also known as the 11+)
In Buckinghamshire, children aiming for grammar schools must sit the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (11+). A score of at least 121 qualifies for grammar school entry.
Students sit the 11+ exam in September at the start of Year 6. Buckinghamshire uses GL Assessment multiple‑choice papers, each roughly one hour long.
Exam structure, students sit two separate exams covering four components:
- Non‑Verbal and Spatial Reasoning
- English (comprehension, spelling, punctuation, grammar, vocabulary)
- Maths
- Verbal Reasoning
11 Plus Exam
11 PLUS EXAM
Is 11 Plus right for your child?
The exam is very challenging—even for adults. It demands commitment from both students and parents, including weekly homework monitoring. High levels of numeracy and vocabulary are essential, so parents should be aware that the 11+ isn’t suitable for every child.
All students on the waiting list must take an introductory assessment (English & Maths) at the beginning of the spring term in Year 4 to ensure they can cope in a group setting.
I strive for honesty and openness, providing the right advice for each child. If you have further questions, please feel free to get in touch.
