The Secondary Transfer Test (also known as the 11+)
In Buckinghamshire, children aiming for grammar schools must sit the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (11+). A score of at least 121 qualifies for grammar school entry.
Students sit the 11+ exam in September at the start of Year 6. Buckinghamshire uses GL Assessment multiple‑choice papers, each roughly one hour long.
Students sit two separate exams covering four components:
- Non‑Verbal and Spatial Reasoning
- Maths
- English (comprehension, spelling, punctuation, grammar, vocabulary)
- Verbal Reasoning
The Exam
Is the test right for your child?
The exam is very challenging—even for adults! It requires commitment from both students and parents, including weekly homework monitoring. High levels of numeracy and vocabulary are essential, so parents should be aware that the 11+ isn’t suitable for every child.
All students on my waiting list are asked to complete an informal assessment (English and Maths) in Year 4. This is absolutely not to screen them to see if I think they will pass or not! It just allows me to gauge if I think they will be able to cope with the course content in a group setting.
I strive for honesty and openness and provide the right advice for each child. If you have further questions, please feel free to get in touch.
